Loewe x “El Viaje de Chihiro”: The new capsule collection combines craftsmanship with imagination

Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson has a flair for great collaborations.

Since joining the Spanish brand in 2013, the designer has launched a host of brilliant capsule collections with the likes of Sotheby’s, Net-A-Porter and Studio Ghibli’s ‘My Neighbor Totoro’. For the latest collection, Anderson has teamed up with another cult classic from Studio Ghibli: Spirited Away.

“I like how [Studio] Ghibli was able to pull off this incredible kind of emotional art and apply it to an image,” the designer tells VOGUE. “‘Spirited Away’ is one of my absolute favorite movies.”

The plot of the film is as complex as it is fantastic.

The 2001 film was directed by legendary Japanese animation filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. While moving to a new neighborhood, ten-year-old Chihiro and her family find themselves drawn into the realm of the kami, the realm of spirits from Japanese Shinto folklore. Here the parents of the protagonist become pigs and she must try to return them to human reality.

“This capsule is for superfans, because that’s what this project is about: engaging with people who are obsessed with Miyazaki’s work,” says the British designer, defining his target audience.
