Met Gala 2022: pieces and designers that cannot be missing at the fair

Following the words that were presented in the curatorial program, this exhibition is inspired by Jesse Jackson’s invocation of the patchwork quilt as a metaphor for the United States and its unique cultural identities:

In this part of In America… Around 100 male and female ensembles from a wide range of designers are featured from the 1940s to the present. Housed in clear cases that represent three-dimensional “patches” of a quilt, all pieces are organized into 12 sections that explore the definition of emotional qualities. These are as follows:

  • Nostalgia
  • membership
  • Delight
  • Happiness
  • Marvelous
  • Affinity
  • Trust
  • Force
  • Wish
  • Safety
  • Comfort
  • Awareness.

Second part. In America: a fashion anthology

Ball gown, Marguery Bolhagen, ca. 1961. Gift of Mrs. William Randolph Hearst, Jr., 1966.

The second part of the exhibition highlights the dress narratives that refer to the complex and layered stories of the American Wing period rooms. That is: a review of the different experiences and tests of the human being in its different lines of gender, migration, social status, economic position and cultural projection, among others. A fundamental aspect of everything there is to know about this year’s Gala.

The men’s and women’s clothing that we see in this section dates from the 18th century to the present day, and will be presented in “vignettes” installed in all rooms from selected periods ranging from 1805 to 1915. The spaces that are located, among others they are: a Shaker Retiring Room from the 1830s; a 19th-century drawing room in Richmond, Virginia; a panoramic mural of Versailles from 1819; and a 20th-century room designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

These spaces thus show a panorama of over two hundred years of American domestic life and tell a variety of stories; from the personal to the political, from the stylistic to the cultural, from the aesthetic to the ideological. The exhibition reflects on these narratives through a series of “still images” in “three-dimensional” format, produced in collaboration with well-known American directors. Undoubtedly, the best wallpaper for the Met Gala 2022 and this explains why the dress codes have been a little more “open” on the last two occasions.
