Michael Kors designs a line of bags together with the young brand Ashya

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of Michael Kors, the designer designs bags together with a young brand from Brooklyn.

Few names are as emblematic of American fashion as Michael Kors. And as the brand celebrates his 40th anniversary, as the designer looks back on his early years in the industry, he rethought what it means to be a new designer in the big city. Thus was born the new collaboration between Michael Kors and Ashya, a small label from Brooklyn that has been given the task of offering a kind of platform to the masses.

The result of the cooperation is two exclusive bags.

“Planning for last year’s anniversary and thinking about my own beginnings in the business got me thinking about the challenges facing young brands today,” said Kors, co-owner of the brand’s young American-Jamaican duo Ashley Cimone and Moya Annece. of Ashya accessories. to create a limited edition of two exclusive bags.

“After everything we’ve been through globally, I think we’re all excited for what’s to come,” Kors added. “The last few years have really shown us the importance of working together and caring about your community. To me, that’s fashion, but it’s also New York. Partnering with an emerging brand is a way to foster that sense of togetherness while also time opening new perspectives.”

Michael Kors even traded his office for the collaboration.

As part of the collaboration, the designers swapped offices to learn about the respective aesthetics and DNA of the two brands. Cimone and Annece visited Michael Kors’ office in Manhattan, and Kors visited his studio in Industry City, Brooklyn. “Both of our brands are rooted in New York and very connected to the city, but we also share a curiosity about the world and a love of travel that unites us,” said Kors.

For the occasion, Kors collaborated with Ashya to create a custom MK signature logo print in a new version inspired by West African weaving techniques called Saga Print. For Ashya, the emphasis on textiles as a storytelling tool has always been an integral part of the brand, so the lines and shapes of African fabric were a key influence. What do designers have in common? A casual approach to luxury. “Michael’s vision of understated luxury, which he pursued from the beginning of his design career, is what struck us most. So when we started thinking about how to stay true to Ashya, it suited us very well because we also wanted to create uncomplicated luxury,” explains Cimone.

The bags are a mix of West African tradition and classic MK.

The bags themselves are versions of Ashya’s signature styles; they are unisex and can be worn in many ways, some of which have yet to be discovered – one of Kors’ biggest draws. “I love that the bags are simple and can be combined in different ways, which makes them suitable for the city, too,” he says. And: “Our clients and friends of the brand often inspire us to use the models in new ways,” explains Cimone. The “Multi Bag” retails for $498 and the “Bolo Bag” for $298.

For Ashya, the collaboration represented a rare kind of validation that many aspiring designers don’t get easily. “We often work in a kind of silo, with little awareness of who is watching or admiring us from afar,” says Annece. “The launch of our collaboration is an official global unveiling for Ashya, sharing our work with the world on a scale beyond imagination at this point in our development process, so excited really is an understatement.”

Kors can also imagine collaborating with young designers in the future

As the brand continues to grow, Kors looks to the future, with more possible collaborations with young designers on the horizon. “I think it’s important to support the next generation of designers,” he adds. “Fashion is always looking to the future and is driven by new ideas and perspectives. Young people in particular have such a fearless attitude. It’s very inspiring.”
